The Q Cafe Company sponsored athlete, Hazel Hu, is gearing up to compete in the International Powerlifting Federation Word Championships today in Texas! Please join everyone in The Q Cafe Company in wishing Hazel the very best of luck competing on such a big stage!

Hazel had her ‘weigh in’ this morning. Learn how she copes with the system of ‘making weight’….

Can you tell us a bit about the system of ‘making weight’

this oneSure! ‘Making weight’ is a term that is used in a weight division sport like
combat sports, weightlifting or powerlifting. The competitor must weigh in at or
less than the weight limit of their division. If he or she is over the limit then they will have to ‘make’ the weight. I generally have a 2 hr weigh in before a competition (some federations or other sports vary with up to 24 hours). Therefore I need to ensure my weight is within range throughout the year as cutting does have an impact on strength and performance on the day of the competition.

How do you eat to make weight and what sort of healthy foods do you love eating?

I track my calories and macros (macronutrients) due to my heavy sessions in training. I aim for sufficient protein from fish/meats/eggs in addition to including healthy fats in each meal with loads of seasonal veggies and fruit. The majority of my carbohydrates will be consumed before, during or after workout. I was brought up eating very little proccesed foods so it just feels natural to eat healthy. Because I want to ensure that I feed my body with better quality foods I naturally steer towards nutrient dense and whole foods.

We all have a guilty pleasures! You must have one?!

I’d love to eat cheesecake everyday but I know that won’t be a good idea and I certainly won’t like it as much if I do eat it everyday! Everything is within moderation and if I do crave something I will eat it on my heavy workout day and not worry about it as I know it will be metabolised (burned) pretty quickly. When you listen to your body and have a better understanding of what it needs you will actualy choose the correct foods to feed it. This way I don’t actually have a bad relationship with food.

What is your go-to healthy meal or snack?

Healthy meals will be all foods that we prepare and cook at home be it a stir fry or roasts and salads. My daughter has a sweet tooth and she will go for fruits and my son loves nuts as a snack and they also eat our cakes (Paleo Man Foods) all the time! Our favourite at the moment are smoothies as they are so versatile and getting your vegetables in the smoothies makes life so much easier.
