VHI Women’s Mini Marathon for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland

The Q Café Company contingent of 10 women who ran the VHI Mini Marathon on 1 June 2015 to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. Well done ladies!

Led by our Managing Director, Breda Quigley, and our Head of Operations, Laura Olson, a wonderful contingent of ladies from The Q Café Company battled wind and rain to complete the 2015 VHI Women’s Mini Marathon in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland.

Cystic Fibrosis affects 1 in 9 people in Ireland, the highest rate in the world. The genetically inherited disease affects sufferers’ lungs and digestive system. The body produces thick mucus, which clogs the lungs, causing life-threatening infections, while also obstructing the pancreas and inhibiting natural enzymes from breaking down food. Ireland contains some of the most severe strains of Cystic Fibrosis observed in research. The predicted median age of survival for a person with Cystic Fibrosis in Ireland is early to mid 30’s. Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and those who raise money for the charity seek to change this! Reference: www.cfireland.ie

This year, in line with the launch of our new health and well-being drive, QWellness, we decided to bring our lovely female employees together to raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis. CF Ireland’s 1 in 1000 campaign for the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon began in 2010 and has raised over 700,000 euro to date. This year some of the money raised will go help families provide sports lessons or buy sports equipment, which will greatly reduce symptoms of the disease. What better way to promote the health and wellbeing of our employees than to join this campaign?

Ten wonderful women signed up and so began the journey of training. Each week our team received nutrition and motivation tips, training plans and goal setting templates from our Wellbeing Consultant, Leah Moore. Our ladies worked hard and progressed wonderfully in the lead up to 1st June.

On the day, the ladies braved extreme weather conditions joining tens of thousands of other ladies (and a few males) raising money for well deserving charities. CF Ireland provided a fantastic facility in D-Two in the Harcourt Hotel to leave bags and valuables before the race. Post-race D-Two was filled with an abundance of cheer and joy. CF Ireland race packs filled with pre and post race essentials were savored, while the constant stream of hot tea, sandwiches and music created an incredible atmosphere of camaraderie and achievement.

Young children suffering with this disease are taught to pronounce cystic fibrosis through the term “65 roses”. A touching reminder that cystic fibrosis suffers in Ireland seek to flourish and bloom like a beautiful rose. Therefore, in order to engage our customers and staff in raising awareness of Cystic Fibrosis in Ireland we are selling CF Ireland roses, trolley coins and wrist bands in selected sites.

If you would like more information on Cystic Fibrosis or how to donate please visit the CF Ireland website on www.cfireland.ie or email l.moore@qcafe.ie.
